I have a blog
It is probably a better idea than me rambling at you in person or on t'internet at less convenient times.

The first few posts will be cut & paste from emails, forum posts, etc, so sorry if they aren't that tidy - enough people read then I might even get round to making them pretty one day.

This is mostly for me to ramble about brain-geeky topics - mostly Specific Learning Difficulties, SpLDs (basically things beginning with dys-, like dyslexia & dyspraxia), and Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ASDs, & related topics.

There's a lot of stuff said about them in the popular press that really is not supported by the evidence, & given that I'm learning how to read & interpret the evidence then I thought I'd try to share some of that.

I'm a final year Psychology undergrad, & I'm also looking for adults (14+), diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc, to help with my final year project. More on that after Christmas when I get ethical clearance, but if you live in NE England, London, South Wales, or anywhere on a train line between them, and can spare an hour to help my degree & Science, please bung me an email or a comment - thanks!

The usual stuff - don't take psychological advice from people you don't know on LJ, go and see your GP, school learning support people, or a BPS-registered Clinical or Educational Psychologist.

Duck,

"In case of confusion, I’m not the same person as behind the ‘Quackometer’ blog, or anything else - I’ve only put one post on my own blog & that was about DORE not homeopathy."

Stop the bullshit. You are a bad science cult member and you know it.

V for freedom from those that would restrict our access to good health care!

Hello FTCH, glad to see that you have found my small corner of t'internet.

I won't delete or edit your or anyone's comments unless they contain swearing (blocks access to the site for library computers) or excessive personal nastiness. If I do have to take anything down (sincerely hope not) I will try to post a warning or at least an explanation. You are welcome to agree or disagree with anything I post here, and I'd invite you to extend the same courtesy to others.

I'm not the same person as anyone else - this is the only blog or website I have which is 'BadScience' related, though I do post on the 'BadScience' mesageboard. I don't intend that to be all the blog covers - I'd like to look at SpLD & ASD research more widely, & maybe also other psychology in the media issues too, not sure yet.

I don't want to prevent any responsible adult from doing anything they want, so long as it doesn't hurt other people. I've been taken round quite a few 'alternative health' practitioners, and some of it was quite enjoyable, relaxing, provided an opportunity to talk, or was otherwise beneficial.

I do believe that people should have access to as much reliable, good-quality information as possible in order to make informed choices about the risks and benefits of treatments for themselves. This is why I find it puzzling that you have twice now taken down comments in which I have provided links to sources of health information - even when some of this information could have been used to support the opinions you have expressed in your posts, for example websites which give side effects for prescription medication.

Thanks for commenting, I look forward to further discussions.
Duck.

How about an article on "How are Dyslexia Action so bad at publishing their research"?

Hello 'Anonymous' (would you mind using a name next time pls, it gets confusing otherwise & I don't know who I'm talking to),

Can you expand on that a bit please?

Unfortunately most of Dyslexia Action's stuff gets published in journals which require a subscription to access. I agree that this is pants, but unfortunately it's the way most scientific publishing still works. If there's specific papers you'd like to see I might be able to do something about that ;) - you can usually look at abstracts for free at least. Otherwise a lot of university libraries are open to the public, & some will let you use their computers to look at online stuff too.

Otherwise I'm not sure to answer without you being more specific. Can you tell me what you think they aren't publishing? If there's something that you really think the world should know, maybe you could start a blog too & write the article yourself - I've said already that I won't delete comments unless they are swearing or massively personal attacks, so if you provide a link I'll leave it there.

Thanks,
Duck.

Hi Brainduck,

Kudos to you on the Dore fisking. What a scam.

I would like to read more of your blog. And so I'd encourage you to consider a little larger font, for the 50+ set. :-)

Gina
